With two full days, prioritise Moon Valley, one night-sky session and one lagoon outing. If you have just arrived from low altitude, this lower-desert plan is a more flexible starting point than immediately stacking El Tatio and Piedras Rojas.

First count your usable days

This plan assumes two full days in San Pedro, with airport travel outside them. If your “two days” includes landing at Calama at lunchtime and leaving the next afternoon, reduce the plan. The airport transfer takes time beyond the flight itself, and shared transfers may involve waiting and additional hotel stops.

The bookable cards above are separate excursions, not one package. Match their departure times and cancellation terms before paying for all three.

Day 1: settle in, then Moon Valley

Morning: take a slow start, organise water and any separately required reserve ticket, and check your operator messages. If arriving that morning, leave time to reach the hotel and eat rather than booking a departure that depends on every connection being on time. With only two days, a central base from the where-to-stay guide saves time between departures.

Afternoon: take the Moon Valley excursion. The shared tour leaves from an agency; the ticket-and-cocktail alternative includes hotel pickup. Decide which makes your day easier and budget for admission if needed.

Evening: eat in the central Caracoles/plaza area after returning. We recommend an early dinner rather than a restaurant reservation with a rigid start time. If the sky tour’s confirmed schedule leaves a comfortable break, stargazing can follow; otherwise use the second evening.

Other experiences you might enjoy

Short extras for two days: the flamingos of Laguna Chaxa, the striped hills of Rainbow Valley, or the El Tatio geysers if you arrive acclimatised.

Day 2: a lagoon choice, then the night sky

Morning: keep time free for rest and town. You can use this interval to confirm bathing access and the day’s return time rather than discovering a mismatch at pickup.

Afternoon: choose Cejar for a floating-focused circuit if bathing is confirmed open. Choose Baltinache for its turquoise scenery, accepting that floating is currently suspended. Booking both makes little sense, so choose the one that fits your main interest.

Evening: allow time to change, have a simple dinner in the centre and reach the stargazing meeting point. If the lagoon tour and astronomy session do not leave that margin, move stargazing to day one or drop the afternoon outing. A two-day visit has little room to recover from cloud cancellations.

Hour by hour: the low-altitude version

Best for: stopovers, travellers worried about altitude, and anyone who cannot add a third night. Highest point: about 3,500 m. Why no El Tatio: going from sea level to 4,300 m within 36 hours is the most common way to feel awful on a short trip.

This version swaps the free morning on day two for Rainbow Valley and makes Cejar the lagoon choice.

Day 1: arrival and Valle de la Luna at sunset

  • 06:00–08:00: fly from Santiago to Calama (a little over two hours).
  • 09:30–11:30: shuttle to San Pedro (about an hour and a half); drop your bags.
  • 12:00–14:30: lunch, water and a slow walk around the plaza and church. No alcohol today.
  • 15:00–20:00: the Valle de la Luna shared sightseeing tour (from about US$32, 4.7/5 from 366 reviews): the Duna Mayor viewpoint, the Tres Marías and a sunset stop your guide chooses. Ask where, because the Mirador de Ckari is closed.
  • 20:30: an early dinner, then bed.

Day 2: Rainbow Valley, Laguna Cejar and the stars

Day 3: leave after breakfast.

Is two days worth it? Yes, if you accept that you are seeing the lowland Atacama. You get the moonscape, the floating lagoon and the night sky, the three things many visitors remember first, but not the geysers or the high lagoons.

Should you substitute a highland day?

If you are already acclimatised and specifically want the highlands, substitute Piedras Rojas for the entire second day. You will lose the lagoon half day and may prefer an early night afterwards. Do not add the full-day circuit on top of the schedule.

El Tatio is another possible priority swap, but its early departure and altitude make it a poor default immediately after arriving from the coast. Two days is not a reason to ignore suitability or operator restrictions. See the altitude guide before deciding.

Meals and costs to organise

Keep breakfast at your accommodation and lunch in town unless a selected tour explicitly supplies them. Ask whether your hotel can provide an early breakfast if you choose a predawn excursion. A cocktail or snack inclusion is not the same as a meal.

Budget for your accommodation, airport transfers, separately charged park tickets, meals and the tour reservations. We do not show a synthetic “two-day package price”: the products have different dates, options and conditions, and the total depends on what you choose.

What an extra day buys you

The three-day itinerary adds flexibility for one major highland excursion. Four full days make it easier to separate the highest trips and leave a spare evening for astronomy. If both El Tatio and Piedras Rojas are essential, consider changing the length of the stay instead of compressing them into your first 48 hours.

BEFORE YOU GO

Your questions, answered

Is two days enough?
It is enough for selected lower-desert highlights, but not a relaxed visit to every major attraction. Count full days rather than nights.
Can I do El Tatio and Moon Valley on one day?
It may fit some schedules, but it is demanding and depends on altitude suitability and actual return times. It is not our default for newly arrived visitors.
Does this itinerary include accommodation?
No. It is an independent plan with separately bookable activities.
Which lagoon should I choose?
Cejar for floating if access is confirmed; Baltinache for scenery while its bathing suspension continues.
Where should I eat?
Use the central Caracoles/plaza area for flexible meals between departures. Check current hours locally rather than making a tight timed reservation.
What if stargazing is cancelled?
A short visit may not leave another available night. Choose a flexible booking and ask about the operator’s weather policy.
Can I manage without a car?
Yes, with booked transfers and excursions. Choose central accommodation and verify meeting points.
Should I add Piedras Rojas?
Only as a replacement for a whole day, with altitude suitability considered. It does not fit as an extra half-day stop.
