Start with layers you will actually use

A warm insulating layer, a wind-resistant outer layer and a comfortable base layer give you more flexibility than one heavy garment. The selected El Tatio tour warns of cold mornings and major temperature changes later. Do not use San Pedro’s afternoon warmth to decide what to wear at sunrise above 4,300 metres.

Add comfortable closed shoes with grip. Standard excursions may use a vehicle between stops, but you still walk on exposed or uneven ground. A tour described as sightseeing is not automatically a paved, step-free route.

Your everyday day bag

Carry drinking water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a warm layer, personal essentials and a charged phone with the confirmation saved offline. Take the identification and payment method requested by your operator. Keep enough room to store layers as the day warms.

Ask the supplier about water and food rather than assuming every van provides them. The Piedras Rojas options differ: one lists breakfast and lunch, another breakfast and snacks. Pack accordingly, including any dietary essentials you have confirmed in advance.

Activity Add to the basic bag Check before leaving
El Tatio Warm hat, gloves, insulating layers; see the El Tatio packing notes Predawn pickup and entry payment
Piedras Rojas Wind protection and comfortable walking shoes Meals, water and reserve tickets
Moon Valley Sun protection, water and a sunset layer Agency meeting point or hotel pickup
Stargazing Substantial warm clothes and closed shoes Late return, facilities and photograph delivery
Cejar Swimwear, towel and dry clothes Current bathing and personal-care-product rules
Puritama Towel and pool/change-area footwear Separate pool ticket and transport slot

Salt lagoons need their own checks

For Cejar, prepare for changing and follow the site’s instructions on entering and rinsing after the water. Do not assume every lagoon stop permits swimming. Ask about sunscreen restrictions before applying products for bathing.

Baltinache currently has a floating suspension. During that period, pack for sightseeing rather than assuming a swimsuit entitles you to enter. The current operator notice should take precedence over old swimming photos.

Night-sky sessions are mostly standing, not hiking

Warmth matters when you stand still at telescopes. Both selected stargazing products list a blanket or poncho, but arrive dressed for the night anyway. Ask about toilets and the return point if those details affect your group.

Bring your own camera only after checking whether the format allows time and assistance to use it. A souvenir photo included in the tour is not the same as a camera workshop. Keep bright lights and phone screens under control according to the guide’s instructions.

Documents, cash and confirmations

Some reserve fees must be arranged before departure and may require cash. Keep the relevant tickets and confirmations accessible offline. Save the actual supplier contact rather than relying on this website to manage a reservation.

For Uyuni, use a separate expedition list: border documents, cash in the required currency, water, warm overnight equipment and the operator’s supplies. A day bag for San Pedro excursions is not enough for remote overnight travel.

Avoid solving a health problem with equipment

Warm clothing and water improve practical comfort, but neither prevents every altitude problem. Read the altitude guide and reconsider ascent if you feel unwell. Do not assume that carrying medicine or booking a vehicle with oxygen removes the need for individual advice and a suitable itinerary.

BEFORE YOU GO

Your questions, answered

Do I need warm clothes in summer?
Yes. High-altitude dawns and outdoor night sessions can be cold even when San Pedro afternoons are warm.
Are hiking boots essential?
The standard sightseeing routes call for comfortable closed shoes with grip. Ask about the actual terrain and walking for your chosen product.
Do tours supply water?
Do not assume so. Check the specific inclusions and carry drinking water unless told otherwise.
Should I bring a towel?
Yes for a confirmed bathing visit. The selected Puritama product excludes towels.
Are blankets enough for stargazing?
They are useful extras. Arrive in warm clothing rather than relying on a supplied blanket alone.
Should I bring cash?
Some admission payments require it. Ask the operator for the amount, currency and payment procedure before departure.
